Illuminated designer light switch. With a hand-antiqued Bronze Antique toggle and an individually selectable RAL colour. From the YORK collection by ROHDE+ROHDE. RAL colours – precise colour planning down to the light switch

The RAL colour system is one of the internationally established standards for the precise definition of colours. Its extensive selection of clearly specified shades makes it possible to coordinate surfaces and components from different manufacturers with a high degree of accuracy.

The YORK front plate can be individually produced in a RAL colour of your choice. This allows the colour scheme of a room to be carried through consistently, right down to the light switches.

This is particularly useful when walls, doors, window frames, furniture, fitted cabinetry or other elements have already been finished in a specific RAL colour. The corresponding shade can be used for the YORK front plate, integrating the switch precisely into the overall design concept.

If the same RAL colour is selected for both the wall and the front plate, the light switch can visually recede into the background. Alternatively, deliberate contrasts can be created: a front plate in a different RAL colour can introduce a clearly defined colour accent within the room.

Bronze Antique – toggles antiqued by hand

The solid metal toggles in Bronze Antique do not achieve their characteristic appearance through a completely uniform industrial coating. Instead, their distinctive colour and surface are created through an elaborate antiquing process carried out by hand using traditional techniques.

As a result, each toggle develops its own individual surface pattern. Subtle variations in colour, texture and intensity are intentional and form part of the handcrafted production process. This makes every Bronze Antique toggle unique.

The warm metallic character of bronze offers numerous design possibilities in combination with RAL colours. It works particularly well with warm whites, beige, brown, red and earthy shades. Muted greens also combine exceptionally well with Bronze Antique.

A distinctly different appearance can be achieved with cool greys, blues or dark shades. Here, the warm bronze toggle creates a deliberate and clearly visible contrast with the colour of the front plate.

Existing details in bronze, patinated metal, dark brass or other warm metal finishes can also be echoed by the toggles to create a coordinated interior scheme.

Bespoke RAL colour hand-painted behind the transparent front

The colour of the YORK front plate is not applied to the visible front surface. Instead, the reverse of the crystal-clear acrylic glass is hand-painted in the chosen RAL colour in the ROHDE+ROHDE light switch studio.

The colour is then viewed through the transparent front. This creates an optical depth that differs noticeably from a conventionally painted surface.

The crystal-clear material forms a transparent layer over the colour, creating the brilliant glass effect characteristic of YORK. Even a RAL shade that appears relatively understated on a matt-painted wall develops its own distinctive visual character on the front plate.

At the same time, the actual paint finish remains protected on the reverse. During everyday use, the colour layer therefore does not come into direct contact with hands or other objects.

Bronze Antique toggle with optional point of light

The Bronze Antique toggle can optionally be fitted with a subtle point of light. A 230 V LED insert is supplied for this purpose and can perform different functions depending on the electrical wiring.

It can be used, for example, as an orientation light in the dark, an indicator light or a permanently visible design feature.

The visual effect of the light point also depends on the selected RAL colour. On dark front plates, it creates a subtle interplay of colour, bronze and light. With light or vibrant RAL colours, the Bronze Antique toggle stands out more strongly against the front.

If illumination is not required, the 230 V LED insert can simply be omitted during installation.

Crystal-clear surface for everyday use

For its YORK front plates, ROHDE+ROHDE uses high-quality crystal-clear acrylic glass with effective scratch protection. The material combines the brilliant appearance of a transparent glass surface with the durability required for a light switch used every day.

It is eleven times more impact-resistant than conventional glass, making it considerably more resistant to mechanical stress.

An integrated UV filter also helps to protect the colour finish behind the glass against long-term changes caused by exposure to light.

Because the paint finish is located on the reverse of the transparent front, the colour layer also remains protected from direct contact.

RAL colour and bronze as part of the interior design

The freedom to choose the RAL colour allows the YORK light switch to be incorporated precisely into the colour and material planning of a room.

For a particularly calm overall appearance, the front plate can be finished in the same RAL colour as the wall. The coloured surface then visually recedes, while the Bronze Antique toggle remains visible as a warm metallic accent.

Another option is to deliberately select a second RAL colour for the front plate. This makes it possible, for example, to repeat colours used on doors, window frames, furniture, kitchen fronts or other fitted elements.

The combination of a precisely defined RAL colour and individually hand-antiqued bronze creates an interesting material contrast: the consistently specified colour meets a metal surface whose subtle variations are intentionally created through hand finishing.

Installation of YORK toggle light switches

YORK is suitable both for individual light switches and for combinations of multiple switches and sockets. In multiple installations, several wall boxes can be combined beneath a single continuous front plate.

The arrangement can be horizontal or vertical. Where several wall boxes are used, the standard 71 mm centre-to-centre spacing must be maintained.

Wall boxes with a minimum depth of 45 mm are required for installation. The switch mechanisms are screwed directly into the wall boxes to ensure secure mounting.

A new wall colour? The front plate can be replaced separately at a later date

With YORK, the visible front plate and the permanently installed switch mechanism are structurally separate. If the room is redesigned at a later date or painted in a different RAL colour, there is therefore no need to replace the complete light switch.

A new YORK front plate in the desired RAL colour can be ordered separately and used to replace the existing front.

The switch mechanism, Bronze Antique toggles, wiring and electrical installation can remain unchanged in the wall.

As replacing the front plate alone does not involve any work on the electrical installation, an electrician is not required.
